Desert Surprise

The Queen butterfly

I took a little road trip down to the desert in Southern California. While wandering at the Sonny Bono Salton Sea Wildlife Refuge, I sighted my first Queen Butterfly. It was a lovely surprise that brought a smile to my face as I delighted in its beauty.

Spring wildflowers came and went kinda early in my world this year.

Burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia): Species of Concern in California. That’s the whole reason I drove over to this refuge in the first place. I used to see these owls in various spots in my area, but lately they haven’t been around in their usual spots, and that’s made me a little bit sad to think they might have disappeared. More than 70 percent of the California population is found within the Imperial Valley, were this refuge is. I was hoping to find more than one together, but that didn’t happen. Instead, I saw around three individually when I was there. Which was awesome just the same!
